The reports generated by these inspections can be ordered from your local health department, or many local health departments are now making the reports of these inspectors available online so consumers can make educated choices on where to eat. Some examples include ensuring employees regularly wash their hands in a sink equipped with soap, hot water and paper towels utensils and surfaces that contact raw meat are not used to prepare ready-to-eat foods and that rodents and other pests are not present. Local laws regulate how frequently these inspections take place, and what specific items the inspectors look for, but, in general, environmental health inspectors check that safeguards are in place to protect food from contamination by food handlers, cross-contamination, and contamination from other sources in the restaurant. Both have die-hard devotees.Local public health departments regularly inspect businesses serving food to ensure restaurants and other food retail outlets are following safe food handling procedures. Step in for a mid-day break or call ahead for take-out. The most beloved of all local diners is Haven Brothers, a trailer on wheels that parks nightly next to Providence City Hall. Available for curbside, patio dining, and inside limited-seated dining room. Providence is the birthplace of the diner, dating back to 1872. Unlike our tight-jawed brethren to the north, who pronounce it "ko-hog," Rhode Islanders say "kwah-hog." No matter how you say it, quahogs are delicious in a variety of ways: shucked and served straight from the sea, added to red sauce and served over spaghetti, or chopped, mixed with stuffing and put back into the half shell - affectionately known as the " stuffie." One of the easiest ways to pinpoint a native Rhode Islander is to have them say this word: " quahog." A type of hard-shelled clam, the quahog is Rhode Island's unofficial mascot.
